'Big but very brief green light': Meteor shower visible in Limerick

Anna Harris spotted the meteor which split slightly before vanishing in the sky
LIMERICK resident Anna Harris spotted a meteor shower after 11pm last Tuesday night which passed over Castletroy towards Castleconnell.
Anna said the meteor was a big but "very brief green light" which moved across the sky from right to left as she looked towards Castleconnell. It split slightly before vanishing.
She contacted the Irish Astronomy Society in Dublin who said it was likely to have been a magnesium based meteor. Anna added that it was "really cool" to see the meteor.

Andrew Le Gear from Limerick Astronomy Club said:
"There is a meteor shower, early in January, so there's a good chance every year, early in January, you'd spot a meteor in the sky.
He explained: "This time in January, you have what's called the Quadrantid meteor shower, and it peaked on January 4th, but you'll have meteors (on) days either side of that as well.
"It's renowned for its intensity and it potentially produces up to 120 meteors per hour at that time so it's very likely that's what she witnessed, a meteor as part of that meteor shower."
Mr Le Gear said the annual meteor shower occurs on that set of dates every year peaking on January 4. "It's like clockwork."
