A NEW tourist office is on the way for Abbeyfeale just in time for summer as a way to further market the Limerick town and its “many amenities.”

The information office will be located on Abbeyfeale's Main Street, in the remote working hub, Workbase E-Hub, headquarters.

Councillor Liam Galvin spoke about the centre, saying “we are hoping to get our office open in the next number of weeks.”

According to the Fine Gael councillor, initially the office was to be open from March, but due to delays it is hopefully to open shortly for the summer period.

“We are hoping that the mayor, Cllr Francis Foley, will do the official opening of it.”

The office itself is to be open on a “voluntary basis,” says Cllr Galvin, and he adds that “17 volunteers have put their names forward to date.”

Described by the councillor as “certainly a positive move,” the office will no doubt add to the town's growing amenities.

With a number of shops, accommodations, boutiques and other vital town necessities to show off, Abbeyfeale people are excited to showcase all they have to offer.

“We have amenities in our town, for example, access to the Greenway, our wonderful town park, our clubs and organisations that are also in the town, the River Feale and we just need to try and put them out to the forefront so we can encourage people using the Greenway to come up to our town, visit our various amenities in our town,” continued the Fine Gael councillor.

Chairperson of Abbeyfeale Community Council, Maurice O'Connell spoke about the running of the tourist information centre.

“This is obviously the first year,” he stated. “We have a list of volunteers who have asked to be part of looking after the desk and giving out the information,” he said.

About funding, the chairperson said, “we have been very fortunate in that we have succeeded in getting funding for a new laptop and a new printer.”

Currently looking for new signage, Maurice adds that after a meeting with “prospective volunteers this week or next week,” the office will be ready to go for the busy tourist season ahead, running from 10am to 4pm, for tourists and residents, and will in future run from March to September each year.

A call is out to anyone who hopes to become a volunteer at the new Abbeyfeale Tourist Office. It is noted that to take part, a volunteer should offer at least two hours a week, and full training will be provided upon application.
