A BRAVE Limerick traffic warden went beyond the call of duty to break up a fight between three men - and got a smack of an umbrella for his trouble.

The incident, which took place on Parnell Street in Limerick city, was captured on a mobile phone and has been widely shared on social media in recent days.

The footage shows two men squaring up to another man. During the ensuing scuffle a closed umbrella was used to hit one of the individuals.

One of the men picks up another man and drops him on the concrete in a wrestling-type manoeuvre. He then punches him in the head on a number of occasions.

At this juncture the cool and calm traffic warden intervenes to break up the fight and prevent matters escalating further. The umbrella is then thrown in the direction of the traffic warden and hits him - although this may not have been intentional.

Limerick Live contacted the Garda Press Office in relation to the incident. A spokesperson said they had "no incident matching" the details provided.
