Call for blood donations in Limerick as pre amber alert issued

Donors both old and new urged to attend upcoming clinics
THE IRISH Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) has issued a pre amber alert to hospitals across Ireland, signalling an urgent need for blood donations as the current supply falls significantly short of the ideal quantity. This alert serves as a proactive measure to ensure that healthcare facilities can continue to provide essential services without interruption.
A pre amber alert indicates that while there is blood supply available, the levels are low and require immediate action to bolster donations.
Currently, the IBTS aims to maintain a minimum of seven days' supply of blood, but the latest figures show an average of just 3.6 days.
Two days of AB negative and two and a half days of O negative blood are available.
The IBTS is urging donors both old and new to make appointments and attend clinics.
A spokesperson for the IBTS said: “New blood donors are especially welcome, and those who have considered donating are encouraged to act now.
“Every donation can save lives and provide essential support for patients in need.”
