A FEASIBILITY study may be carried out on the future of a former school building out of use for five years.

The former Gaelscoil Sáirséal building at Bridge Street closed in 2017 after the move to Shelbourne Road.

Since then, the complex has remained out of use.

Now, Limerick City and County Council is to see if a feasibility study can be carried out as to its future use.

It comes with the local authority holding talks with the current owner of the building.

Economic director Vincent Murray told councillors the owner is keen to look at its potential future uses, including for office space.

This all came up after Labour councillor Conor Sheehan, a former student of the school, saw a notice of motion passed seeking action on the building at this month’s metropolitan meeting.

“I remember what it was like being educated in that building. It was an experience. Every time a pane went in a window, it got replaced with a bit of plywood. But it's a fantastic building, it's a historic building. It should be a beautiful building in our community but instead it's a festering eyesore on King's Island at the moment,” Cllr Sheehan said.

“We know there have been issues with King's Island. We've done enormous work. Doing something with this building to bring it either into residential use as we need more people, or commercial or cultural use which would bring people to King's Island. We need people living there, but also socialising there,” concluded the northside councillor.

His motion was seconded by Green Party member, and his colleague on the northside, Cllr Sasa Novak.
