LIMERICK City and County Council are to sell a patch of land in the village of Patrickswell - for just €1.

Some 7.2 square metres of land at Belgard Grove in Main Street is to be transferred from the local authority to Gas Networks Ireland.

Staff at the utility firm will use the land to carry out some underground works.

The proposed sale was presented to members of the metropolitan district this week.

In a briefing note to councillors, head of property Jayne Leahy stated: "Gas Networks Ireland are carrying out a nationwide programme of works whereby they are replacing underground district regulating installation with above ground installation. The site is the optimum location to replace the Patrickswell district regulating installation."

A distribution network pressure reduction station, or DRI for short, is designed to reduces the pressure of gas to allowable limits.
