Verdict on plans for new infill homes in Limerick

PLANS have been approved to build almost 20 homes in two parts of the northside.

At the metropolitan meeting, councillors gave the green light to the development of 13 houses at Quarry Road in Thomondgate.

They also passed a project which will see six new units built at Knockhill, Ferndale in Caherdavin.

In Thomondgate, the 13 homes are planned for a green area off Quarry Road.

Nine regular houses and four apartments are in the plan, with the largest providing enough room for six people to live.

Four of the dwellings will have space for five people with the others providing room for two and three people.

The four apartments will provide space for two and three people, according to the plans approved by councillors.

Fifty people are expected to be accommodated in total.

There were three observations to the public plan put before councillors, including from the Thomondgate Residents Association.

They said while they’re not against housing, they did not agree with open space being taken away, pointing out there are other spots for infil builds.

In response, Mayor John Moran stated bare concrete walls, anti-social behaviour and security fencing make the green space “unattractive” as a recreational spot.

Across in Caherdavin, locals raised concerns over traffic.

One person said they are “extremely worried and frustrated” that six more houses are planned close to the entry and exit road.

"We need a slip road in and out of Ferndale to ensure residents have easy access in and out of our estate. This is becoming a major problem and will only get worse when construction of new homes commence,” one objection to the plans reads.

Mayor Moran in response, pointed to a road safety audit which was carried out for these new homes.
