Dedicated priest named Limerick Person of the Month

THOSE who worship at the Mount St Alphonsus Church in Limerick city will be well aware of Fr Seamus Enright and the Trojan work he has done for the community in his 14 years in situ as the Rector of the Redemptorist Fathers.

Now, his efforts have been formally recognised as he has been named the Limerick Person of the Month.

Originally from Mulgrave Street in Limerick, Fr Enright has been the Rector at Mount St Alphonsus Church for 14 of the last 20 years and has been a permanent figure there for the last eight years.

He has been known for spearheading a number of initiatives, both within the church, and the community.

His time in Limerick has now sadly come to an end as this month he will move to Dundalk to serve a new parish.

In 2022, the Redemptorist celebrated 50 years of their Christmas Hamper Appeal, an initiative that has seen around 300,000 food hampers distributed to the people of Limerick.

Fr Enright was instrumental in the success of the campaign and making sure that families had food on the table at Christmas.

The 73 year-old was also involved in an International effort to help those who had been displaced by the war in Ukraine.

Collections were held at services with funds raised sent directly to the war-torn country to help families.

Fr Enright was on hand in Limerick to welcome Ukranians as they arrived in Ireland and was a driving force in helping a number of refugees settle in the city and surrounding areas.

Speaking at a special presentation at the Clayton Hotel at Steamboat Quay in Limerick city, Fr Enright graciously accepted the Person of the Month award but said it was on behalf of all those who had supported the church and their initiatives over the years.

The Limerick man was praised during his time as Rector for his open-mindedness and modern approach to the world and religion.

In 2022, after controversial remarks were made by Fr Sean Sheehy during a sermon in Listowel, Fr Enright said he “doesn’t believe being gay or transgender is a sin”.

In 2018, the Redemptorist Order signed up to a new Breastfeeding Friendly initiative and speaking at the time Fr Enright said:

“It is important that it is normalised in everyday society”.

Fr Enright said it was an “honour” to receive the award in recognition of his work and that the glassware would take pride of place in his new home in County Louth following his move there later this month.

The Limerick Person of the Month award is sponsored by the Limerick Leader, media agency Southern and the Clayton Hotel.
