Dolphins, dragons and whales live in perfect harmony in Limerick

Dolphins join breast cancer survivors and supporters for a paddle in the city

THE LIMERICK Dragons had their own fairy tale in Limerick city when they were joined on a boat trip by some frolicking dolphins.

A video of the interaction in the River Shannon, directly in front of the new multi-million Verizon building on Saturday, has been shared widely on social media.

The Limerick Dragons - a dragon boat paddling and support club for breast cancer survivors and supporters - also shared it on their Facebook page.

“Limerick dragons had a wonderful morning on the river. Thanks so much to Philip for sending these media on.

“No better way to start the day and oh did I mention there were dolphins,” read a post.

The bottlenose dolphins are known as the Shannon Dolphins. The population in the Shannon estuary is the only known resident group in Irish waters and is only one of six such groups in Europe. Although it is unusual to see the dolphins so far up the estuary.

There could soon be boat trips in Limerick city to see marine life after the first case of a humpback whale in the Shannon Estuary was reported last December.

The dolphins certainly made the dragons’ Easter.
