"I FEEL over the moon," said Cllr Stephen Keary, just after he was hoisted high in the air by supporters after topping the poll in Adare-Rathkeale.

"I'm so delighted," said the Fine Gael stalwart as he thanked people for the help and support he got and the electorate for voting in such numbers for him.

"I'm speechless, to be honest with you," said Cll Keary, who topped the poll with 2,329 first preferences, comfortably exceeding the quota of 1,879.

It has been a tough time for Cllr Keary and his family following a cancer diagnosis.

"Thankfully, I beat the odds and overcame the cancer. I got treatment and it was successful and gladly I was able to contest this election without any problems," said Cllr Keary, who at one time didn't know if he was going to be able to run.

"I had to weigh my options up and I wasn't sure how my health would work out but as it happened, I'm fine. I'm feeling well and looking forward to the next five years.

"It's been a rollercoaster. I've been on the road for the last three months - morning, noon and night. I met some wonderful people and I have to thank the people of Adare-Rathkeale who put their faith and trust in me again for another five years," said Cllr Keary.
