Family hope independent examination into daughter's death brings 'justice'

AN INDEPENDENT examination into the death of a young Limerick woman has been ordered by the new CEO of the HSE.
Eve Cleary, aged 21, of Corbally, passed away hours after she was discharged from University Hospital Limerick (UHL). The beloved daughter of Melanie and Barry died in the early hours of Sunday, July 21, 2019.
A verdict of medical misadventure was recorded at her inquest in October, 2021. The inquest heard that Eve's cause of death was cardiac arrest due to extensive bilateral pulmonary thrombolisation and deep vein thrombosis (clots).
A HSE spokesperson told Limerick Live that CEO Bernard Gloster confirms that he met the Cleary family on Friday and told them he would "arrange for an independent examination of their late daughter’s case".
"It is not unusual for health and social care services to review cases and this very often can contribute to learning. Mr Gloster again expressed his and the HSE’s deep sympathy with the Cleary family.
"The HSE cannot discuss the details of its individual engagements with members of the public and when anyone enters into any relationship with the health service they do so with the expectation that the information generated in that context is confidential to them," said the HSE spokesperson.
Eve's mum, Melanie, welcomed Bernard Gloster's decision.
"We hope this independent examination reveals the full truth of Eve's care and death at UHL.
"We have always looked for this independent examination and maybe now our family can finally have some form of justice for our beautiful Eve," said Melanie.
The news was also welcomed by the Mid-West Hospital Campaign.
