FORMER Limerick councillor Cian Prendiville is to contest the European election for People Before Profit.

Mr Prendiville, who represented City North on the council between 2014 and 2018, will now contest the much larger Ireland South constituency, an area which takes in the Munster counties, plus Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford and Wicklow.

It’s the Woodview man’s first foray into representative politics in almost six years, having stepped down from council in October 2018.

However, he’s remained active within politics, working for high-profile TD Paul Murphy.

“I am delighted to have been selected to represent Ireland South for People Before Profit in the upcoming European elections.

It was people power movements against austerity which propelled me onto the council in 2014, and defeated the government’s attempt to introduce water charges, and that’s something I feel we need more of today,” said Mr Prendiville.

“We have had 10 years of supposed growth, but in reality public services, wages and living standards have been stagnating, while rents, prices and profits are skyrocketing. We need to rekindle some of that spirit of 2014 now and build campaigns for housing, healthcare and climate action.,” he concluded.

The European election in Ireland takes place on June 7.
