Fresh hurdle for new Limerick road plan

A FRESH HURDLE to plans for a new road between two northside communities has emerged.

Council is proposing to link Woodview with Moyross through a road and walkway.

But the plans have brought opposition, sparking doubts as to whether they will be passed in their current format.

Unlike regular planning applications, it is the role of metropolitan district councillors to decide whether to reject or accept these plans.

City North councillors have been in talks with local authority bosses, with Cllr Olivia O'Sullivan formally requesting the route of the link be reconsidered:

“The council have got this one wrong,” she said.

It remains to be seen if the proposals will come before councillors in their current format, or if there will be a rethink. But if they were to come for a vote as it’s currently planned, there would be a further hurdle before builders go on site.

That’s because what’s planned at the moment relies on the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board (ETB) giving up part of its own land at Thomond Community College.

It would be up to the State education authority's members in Limerick and Clare to decide whether the land is transferred to council, and a spokesperson for the group said Education Minister Norma Foley will also need to sign off on it.

The ETB is chaired by Limerick councillor Kieran O'Hanlon, a critic of the road.
