Caution given as jump in burglaries of businesses recorded across Limerick

GARDAÍ give tips to retailers as they warn of one common mistake which is “attracting criminals”.

An increase in burglaries in retai premises across Limerick has seen gardaí offer advice to business owners, including security tips which will help keep premises “secure”.

“Some retail premises still leave a cash float in their tills overnight. This is what is attracting the criminals,” said Sergeant Ber Leetch, crime prevention officer at Henry St garda station.

“A business in Limerick city was broken into recently and the criminal found the key to the safe in the office drawer and helped himself to a large sum of money from the safe,” she said.

“Keep your cash float either off the premises or in a safe.  A cash safe is vital to businesses but purchase one that is of a very good standard.”

Sgt Leetch also said that business owners should ensure that their safe “is bolted to a solid wall or to the floor.”
