Goodbyes are signed, sealed and delivered for postmistress in Limerick town

AN POST has given confirmation that they are looking to reassign a new postmaster or postmistress to one Limerick office, after an announcement of closure earlier this week.
Askeaton postmistress, Yvonne Whelan, shared a statement on the Askeaton Post Office Facebook page, where she announced her retirement from An Post after 21 years.
Yvonne, who started working in the Askeaton An Post in 2002, said that her business “just isn’t viable anymore” due to the “reduction in revenue” and lack of employees.
However, An Post has since given corroboration that they are hoping to replace Yvonne once she retires in July. A spokesperson has said: “We are advertising the contract and will hope to have a replacement contractor in place in good time.
“We have a three-month window in which to appoint a new contractor.”
The post office premises, which is located in the St Mary’s Terrace area of the county Limerick town, is going to be vacant from July 31 onwards. The statement of closure states that anybody who may be interested in taking it over can apply to An Post to do so.
Local councillor Adam Teskey, said: “As a public representative, I want to thank, firstly, Yvonne and her staff for their immense contribution to An Post and to the Askeaton area, to the people, and for the service it provided.
“The Whelan and Sheehan families are both well respected members of the community - it’s a huge loss of a highly used service.”
People of the area flocked to the comment section to wish Yvonne well, with one person saying: “Yvonne, you and your staff will be hugely missed. There’s always a chat and a bit of craic in the post office. It has always been central to our community”.
