Top quality cattle on show at 94th Limerick Show

CATTLE at agri shows are looked after better than some humans and the green carpet was even rolled out for them at the Limerick Show.

Despite the difficult year for farmers with the drought, Mike Laffan, chair of the cattle section, said exhibitors turned out in force.

“We hope they have an enjoyable day here. You can see the change in the layout with the carpet and the hardcore and the straw for the animals and that appears to be working well.

“I’d like to thank the volunteers for stepping in and helping set it up for us,” said Mr Laffan, who was showing a couple of calves in the ring.

“We enjoy the experience of showing. It's a big, big entry from all around Ireland. We're pleased with the entry we have,” said Mr Laffan.

A new safety system which prevented members of the public from wandering through the area where cattle are being prepared worked very well.

There was one four letter word uttered most of all and it’s not the one directed at unruly bulls or heifers – rain.

“It's great not to have it for the next four to five hours but it can rain tomorrow and the rest of the week!” said Mr Laffan.

One of the beauties of agricultural shows is the comradery. Mr Laffan touched on it as did John McCarthy, Cappamore Show chairman, which also had a terrific cattle section.

Shows are a chance for farmers to meet up and chat about the weather and the lack of fodder and how everybody is in the same boat.

That’s as valuable as going home with a cup.
