Bicycle owners are urged to secure them properly and use a lock

GARDAÍ in Limerick are warning bicycle owners to take extra precautions to ensure their property is not stolen.

Sergeant Ber Leetch, the crime prevention officer with Henry Street garda station says that July, August, September and October are the months when most bicycles are stolen.

She told Limerick Live: “Do not add to the statistics, secure your bike from the frame to a

stationary object with a good quality U-lock and secure the wheels using a coil or cable lock or chain. Make sure that the lock is up off the ground.

“The reason you should use a second lock of a different type is that thieves may only be equipped with the tools to open or break one type of lock. Do not leave your bike unsecured or unattended, not even for a second.

“Thieves are fast and always looking for opportunities. Do not assume that your bike is safe in your garden or shed or in the lobby or hallway of a building unless it is locked.”

Sergeant Leetch added that people should expect to pay between 10% and 20% of the value of the bicycle on a good lock.

She said that more expensive bicycles should also be insured and that all bicycle owners should have a note of the frame number and pictures of the bike to assist gardaí in case it is stolen.
