Limerick singer-songwriter releases new ‘murder’ ballad

DEPRAVITY and love are the main themes of a new track, which will be released by a Limerick artist.
Newcastle West folk singer and songwriter, Paul Dunworth, released a new track – just in time for the holidays.
To launch his new track, “Down in the Willow Garden”, Paul will be joined on the fiddle by Cáit Ní Riain for a live performance at Ed Lynch's Bar in Newcastle West on this Wednesday, December 28.
An old Traditional Murder ballad, ‘Down in the Willow Garden’ is about a man who murders his lover and now faces the gallows, historically known as ‘Rose Connelly.’
Originally from Ireland, the song found its way across the Atlantic to the Appalachian region of the United States.
Speaking of the new release, Paul commented: "The track is one I have always loved since I heard it. Although depicting a dark tale of depravity, the track has a beautiful melodic structure which drew me to it."
That’s why the folk singer-songwriter decided to perform his own version, while adding another instrument such as the fiddle, to add “relevant textures” to the music.
“I had met Cáit Ní Riain through an Artist friend of mine named Micheál Rowsome who also ended up performing camera duties on this project with Dylan McCormack. Cáit is a great musician and performer who added exactly what I was looking for”, Paul added.
