Limerick town to get a new community garden

WORK has started on a new community garden in Newcastle West with the local Tidy Towns group at the forefront of the project.
The group have secured a site in the business park in the town which will soon be home to flowers, plants, vegetables and wildlife.
This is one of the biggest projects that the Tidy Towns group, which has been running for over 50 years, has ever taken on but they won't be alone in their venture.
Vicki Nash, Chairperson of the group, is encouraging anyone who has an interest in gardening, or wants to learn more, to get involved.
“The committee will do a lot of the work but we will need some help from the outside when using the heavy equipment!” she said.
“We are encouraging people who are interested to get involved. It is a great way to make friends too, there are multiple benefits to it.
“People can work together to create something for themselves and for the community in general”.
The project was first proposed a number of years ago however, the committee were trying to find a good location.
After mapping out the garden in October last year, the process of starting work on the ground has started and Vikki hopes that they will start planting this season.
“We wanted to have a place where people of all ages and abilities can come and enjoy the setting. They will see seed planting as well as flowering and vegetables.
“It will allow for people to learn new skills regarding how to grow and harvest. It is important to learn how you can and should grow food without the use of chemicals”.
