THE Priomh Chomhairleoir Dan McSweeney has met with the Taoiseach Simon Harris to discuss key areas he and other councillors want to see delivered over the next five years.

Cllr McSweeney was among eight Fine Gael councillors who met with the Taoiseach to talk about key priorities and deliverable projects.

As the deputy to the Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, Cllr McSweeney is the first ever Priomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick city and county.

He said: “I was honoured to have been appointed to this role last month and look forward to constructive engagement with all stakeholders to deliver on behalf of the people of Limerick during the course of my one-year term.

“As a 25-year-old man, I’m well aware of the challenges facing young people in securing affordable accommodation and for that reason housing is a priority issue for me.

“The ramping up of the supply of housing nationwide by Government has been extremely positive. However, I want to see a substantial increase in the delivery of affordable purchase housing in Limerick so that more people of my generation can realise their dream of having a home.

“Fine Gael’s record in supporting communities can be seen through the impact made under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund, the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, the Outdoor Recreation and Infrastructure Scheme, the Community Investment and Infrastructure Fund and many more.

“I have seen first hand the importance of these funding schemes and the projects they have delivered for the people of Limerick. In excess of €4 million has been invested in active travel projects in the local community here. I have no doubt that further progress can be made to connect our communities through transport and infrastructure projects in the future.”

Taoiseach Simon Harris said: “I was delighted to meet with Councillor McSweeney to discuss the work ahead in delivering for communities in Limerick.

“We had positive engagement and our councillors intend to build on the progress made with a set of priorities that will guide our work over the next five years. These include more ambition on housing, backing small businesses and enterprise, better public services and infrastructure and healthy and sustainable communities.

“I look forward to the work of the Fine Gael team in delivering on the shared ambition we have to improve peoples’ lives,” the Taoiseach concluded.
