Laois councillor reports illegal dumping at council sites and rivers, suggesting preventative fencing and stronger penalties

Several reports have emerged of illegal dumping at Laois locations.

Speaking at the October meeting of Graiguecullen / Portarlington Municipal District, Independent Cllr Aisling Moran reported illegal dumping on a council site opposite the unfinished Saplings school in Graiguecullen.

She lamented the cost to the council of removing the waste and suggested that a fence be erected around the affected site.

Speaking to the Leinster Express / Laois Live, Cllr Moran noted that there should be “stronger penalties” for illegal dumping, suggesting that the current fines are insufficient deterrents.

Also at the October meeting, Cllr Ben Brennan raised concern about illegal dumping on council grounds at the Castlecomer roundabout on the Northern Relief Road, Graiguecullen, which had emerged in the days preceding Halloween. He told the Leinster Express / Laois Live that mattresses and timber palettes had been piled at the spot and suggested that the perpetrators were accumulating the materials for a bonfire.

Laois County Council cleared the area before Halloween night and erected a fence.
