Lucky escape for family after car plunges down 30ft ravine on busy Limerick road

CALLS have been made for a safety barrier to be extended on a busy Limerick road to prevent vehicles plunging down a ravine, after two incidents in two weeks.
On July 31, a car containing two adults and two children went through a ditch on the R513, at Kilglass, Anglesboro, and dropped up to 30 feet into a watercourse.
A garda spokesperson said: “The four occupants of the car were taken to Nenagh General Hospital as a precaution.”
Cllr Eddie Ryan visited the site, just a few miles from Mitchelstown on the R513.
“Thankfully the family didn't get seriously injured ,” said Cllr Ryan, who says he intends putting down a motion at the September meeting of the Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District calling on the council to extend the safety barrier on the R513 at Kilglass.
Two weeks later on Friday, August 11, Cllr Ryan said a van went off the road at Kilglass but stayed in the ditch.
“It was another lucky escape,” said the Independent councillor.
Cllr Ryan made representations in the past to have the barrier erected but says it now needs to be extended further before there is a fatality.
“It needs to be all the way along that stretch. It is a 20 to 30 fot drop into a flow of water. We are very fortunate that over the years no one has been seriously injured as there have been a number of accidents,” said Cllr Ryan.
