Council make fresh announcement on plans for All-Ireland final Sunday

LIMERICK City and County Council have announced an emergency road closure to allow a ‘watch party’ for Sunday’s All-Ireland final.

Limerick’s hurlers will go toe-to-toe with Galway at Croke Park, throw in at 3:30pm.

And the city centre’s streets are set to be a sea of green after plans were announced jointly between Limerick City and County Council plus Limerick GAA to host a big screen to beam images back from GAA headquarters.

Access to the watch party will be free, but those wishing to attend need to pre-register here.

The gates will open at 2pm on Sunday. But there will be disruptions for motorised traffic from Thursday night until Tuesday evening.

In a notice advising of the closures, council says the extended time for the closure “is needed to set up stage like structure for screening and the de-rigging process for this event.”

Back in 2023, Pery Square also played host to a homecoming for the victorious hurlers and this could potentially provide an explanation for the four-day window for works this time around.

No homecoming plans will be announced until after the full-time whistle at Croke Park on Sunday.

Roads closed will be Pery Square itself, alongside Barrington Street, laneways off Barrington Street including Little Barrington Street.

MacSweeney’s Lane is to be closed, alongside Carrolls Row, plus Hartstonge Street and Pery Street.

Other routes and roads that will be subsequently affected on approach will have some road closures at certain times are: Glentworth Street, from its junction at Catherine Street to Dominic Street, Dominic Street itself, Upper Mallow Street, Mallow Street, Catherine Street, Catherine Place and Boherbuoy.

Motorists are being warned to expect delays during this period, with diversions via Henry Street and Hyde Road

Council says any inconvenience caused is regrettable but unavoidable.

Access will be maintained to emergency services at all times.

Local access for business and residents will be maintained until such time as the streets need a full closure, with the organisers of the watch party, CWB Events to advise on this.
