TALKS are taking place with a view to opening a playground on part of a long-disused patch of land in Corbally, Limerick.

The Bishop’s Field, which lies adjacent to St Munchin’s College in the suburb, has long been out of use, and remains owned by Limerick Diocese.

Now, talks have taken place between the diocese and the local authority with a view to transferring a parcel of land for what the council has described as a “local amenity.”

Councillors for the northside ward which Corbally is located in have agreed to earmark €100,000 for the facility.

One of those members Frankie Daly said: “Before the last election, it's something seen as being unattainable. It was quoted as being private land. But I'm delighted to report due to discussions with the diocesan office there is an agreement for land to be transferred to council.”

The father-of-two, who lives in the Irish Estates nearby, believes a play park would be vital for youngsters.

“It’s critically important for young people, those with mixed abilities and things like that, that they have a place to be catered for,” he said.

Another small part of the land is to be used to facilitate wider footpaths and cycle lanes along Corbally Road, which can often be congested in the morning and evening peak travel times.

Councillor Daly hopes the new playground can mirror what is in Mungret Park on the other side of the city.

“People with mobility issues, wheelchair users, young children with autism and special needs will be catered for as part of the design process. Eventually, you'd look to have something like this into the future. I'm just delighted the diocese has come on board in consultation with council,” he said.

A council spokesperson confirmed the talks over the transfer of a portion of land.

A Limerick Diocese representative added: “The diocese and Limerick City and County Council officials have had discussions around future use of a portion of land on the St Munchin’s Campus. These discussions are ongoing.”
