RAILINGS are to be erected alongside the entirety of one of the city’s quays after concerns were raised over safety.

Limerick City and County Council is seeking a contractor to erect protection along the whole of Steamboat Quay.

At present, a section of the riverside area does not have railings, and is open to the water, with local councillor Azad Talukder among those to raise concerns about the safety of local residents.

He said many people living in the apartment complexes in the area use the quay as a de-facto front-garden, and children are often seen playing in the area.

In a new document, the council have outlined the plans for the area, which will see the refurbishment of the existing railing and the construction of a second section in the space to the right of the skate park which does not have one at present.

“Railing will be erected, along the full frontage which will allow access to the waterway if required,” a council spokesperson confirmed.

Cllr Talukder said: “Residents will be very happy. Children will have a safer place to go, and this will also be the case for people coming to visit Limerick. They will see the change, see the benefit of it. It’s a very positive move from the council.”

“It’s great news for myself and the residents of the area,” the Fianna Fail councillor for City West added.
