New 'solar-powered' bins earmarked for Limerick's O'Connell Street

COUNCIL is to install state-of-the-art waste bins beside the newly-created seating areas along the city centre’s main thoroughfare.
The €9.1m revamp of O’Connell Street in the city is nearing completion, with wider footpaths in place to allow people gather, on-street trading and spill-out zones from shops and cafes.
While construction workers left the site to aid traders during the busy Christmas shopping period, they are to return in the coming days to put the final touches.
In the run up to the festive holiday, seating was erected on the street, alongside new trees, and other planters.
However, the absence of litter bins was noted.
In information sought by Fine Gael City East councillor Sarah Kiely, this facility is to be introduced.
“New double bins will be installed in the New Year. One for recycling and one for general waste,” said Cllr Kiely, who spoke with Seamus Hanrahan, the local authority’s senior executive architect.
“They were delivered before Christmas and are in storage over at Cleeves. They should be installed in January,” she added.
The bins will differ from those which have traditionally been put in place near seated areas in city streets. There will be solar power compactors.
Councillor Kiely added: “I’m looking forward to seeing the end result – sooner rather then later hopefully. The revitalisation has been a roller coaster from the start and the ill-feeling people have is justified.”
