Nineteen new rental apartments for Limerick city

GOVERNMENT has approved 19 more apartments for Limerick city centre.
The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has issued a letter of approval for the units which will be located at Sonny’s Corner.
Located at the junction of Island Road and Athlunkard Street, it is currently green space opposite St Mary’s Church.
These units will be designated as cost rental, which means they will be made available to private tenants at 25% below the average rate for tenants.
Earlier this year, councillors approved a loan of €3.8m to part-finance the project, with the balance of €2.8m being provided by the affordable housing fund.
The 19 units will be in a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments, while two additional homes are being built as social housing.
Northside Green Party councillor Sasa Novak welcomed the funding.
“The development at Sonny’s Corner will be transformative for the area. By bringing affordable living options to the city centre, we are not just creating homes, we are creating vibrant communities, supporting local businesses, and contributing to the revitalisation of Nicholas Street and its surrounding areas,” she said.
Cllr Novak added: “Housing developments like these will make the city centre a vibrant and welcoming place for all.”
