Go Purple Day aims to raise awareness of domestic abuse and the support services available throughout Ireland

LIMERICK gardai are reminding members of the public to show their support for Go Purple Day which aims to raise awareness of domestic abuse and the support services available throughout Ireland.

Go Purple Day takes place on Friday.

Sergeant Michelle O’Halloran, Crime Prevention Officer of Henry Street Garda Station said:

"Domestic abuse can affect anybody, regardless of age, gender or background, and campaigns like this are important in helping people know that support is available and that they are not alone.

"We’re encouraging members of the public, businesses, schools and community groups to show their support by wearing purple or promoting the campaign online.

The local crime prevention officer added that there are excellent services available nationwide offering confidential support, advice, safety planning and assistance with court orders if required. If somebody is in immediate danger, they should contact emergency services on 999 or 112.

"Organisations including Women’s Aid, Men’s Aid and Adapt Domestic Abuse Services provide invaluable assistance and support to victims of domestic abuse."

Sgt O'Halloran concluded: "Please remember that help is available. Nobody should suffer in silence, and Gardaí along with support organisations are here to listen, support and help people access the assistance they need."
