Developers to seek go-ahead for shopping centre expansion

DEVELOPERS are set to seek planning permission for a multi-storey complex on the northside, with a private medical centre at its heart.

Kozamin Properties Ltd, a firm with John and Karina Davey as directors, is to seek the go-ahead to expand the Caherdavin Shopping Centre, where the same family ran a general store.

Under the plans, a three-storey building will be added to the right hand side at the rear of the popular neighbourhood centre.

And it is predicted that the project will bring up to 50 jobs in the construction stage and 50 permanent jobs.

As well as the medical centre, 11 new apartments and a cafe are also planned for the building.

Auctioneer Tom Crosse, of GVM, who is acting for the landlord in the development said: “That centre is long established on the periphery of a very well-known housing development.

“Caherdavin has been synonymous with the northern side of the city for many, many years. I think it’s only fitting such a development happens here, to support all the housing in the area.”

He confirmed the medical facility will be run by a private firm and discussions have already been held with a number of providers.

“There is demand for such facilities in all the suburban areas, and Caherdavin is no different. I think it will benefit the area greatly and support the housing and local population in a big way. It’ll be very welcome. The apartments overhead will also provide much-needed accommodation for the area, which people are crying out for generally,” Mr Crosse added.

Local Fine Gael councillor Olivia O’Sullivan said: “I would need to see the drawings before commenting further but I would like to see investment into the buildings here which would align the centre more with the quality of the surrounding neighbourhood.”

An application is due before council in the days to come.
