THE HEAD teacher at Limerick prison has been honoured by President Michael D Higgins after she received a Gaisce award for her efforts in supporting young people to reach their full potential.

The Gaisce Recognition Award ceremony took place at Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park, Dublin at the weekend.

One of those honoured was the Limerick-based teacher Anita Dooley who was praised for her implementation of the Gaisce programme in Limerick prison.

Anita was one of 34 President’s Award Leaders from across the country who were honoured.

Gaisce’s Civic Merit Award honours President’s Award Leaders who guide young people through the Gaisce personal development programme, which enhances confidence through participation in personal, physical, community and team challenges.

Speaking about the Awardees, Avril Ryan, Acting CEO of Gaisce said she was delighted to celebrate the work of our President’s Award Leaders across the country.

“For many young people, a Gaisce Award is often the first time they receive any recognition for their achievements. A Gaisce Award recognises volunteering and leadership skills - whilst also promoting that young people have every opportunity to dream big and fulfil their potential," she said.

During the ceremony, a special message from President Higgins was read by Chair of Gaisce John Cunningham.

“The leadership of all of you has undoubtedly played a significant role in the success of the programme and the growth and development of the participants. It is with great pleasure and a sense of gratitude that I send my warmest congratulations and my sincere appreciation for your valued contribution to Gaisce.”

Since the beginning of Gaisce in 1985, over 300,000 young Irish people have completed a Gaisce Award programme, thanks to leaders such as Anita in Limerick prison, inspiring students to achieve their goals.
