Protest outside Limerick Greyhound Stadium

A PEACEFUL protest to ban greyhound racing took place in Limerick city.
The protest, which is believed to be organised by Ban Greyhound Racing Limerick, took place outside the Limerick Greyhound Stadium on the Dock Road.
It is believed there are around 25 protesters taking part in a ‘silent protest’ outside the grounds.
There was a similar protest last Thursday, also outside the Limerick Greyhound Stadium.
The recent controversy surrounding greyhound racing follows RTÉ’s documentary, RTÉ Investigates: Greyhounds Running For Their Lives.
A spokesperson for the Irish Greyhound Board told the Limerick Leader this Friday: "The IGB respects the right for peaceful protest and has accommodated protesters at a number of its venues in recent weeks, including in Limerick. The IGB has and will continue to take the advice of An Garda Siochana in relation to the management of any protests in Limerick or other greyhound stadia that may arise. The IGB’s primary concern is to ensure a safe environment for all in attendance at its stadia, adjoining householders and the general public.
He said that Thursday was a busy night at the stadium with a "significant attendance enjoying the night’s racing".
"The IGB continues to progress a number of Board recommendations and reforms to further enhance greyhound care and industry integrity. A number of measures have already been put in place including the extension of the foster care scheme; anadditional financial support for Irish rehomings to our partnered private rehoming agencies (worth €100 per greyhound); and the confidential Greyhound Care Line (available on 061 448100). We continue to request that any party aware of the bad treatment of a greyhound contacts us, as a matter of priority, on the telephone number provided.”
