‘It is a timely reminder that we need to be security conscious, even when we are at home and particularly overnight’

THE LATEST in a recent string of car thefts in Newcastle West occurred in the early hours of this Wednesday, November 4.

Limerick Live has received reports that a car was stolen in a Newcastle West estate early this morning, after unsuccessful attempts were made to steal other cars.

One social media user posted CCTV footage that appears to depict two individuals looking into a car window at 5am before walking away.

When contacted, gardaí said they have received no reports of this incident as of yet.

Gardaí are also currently investigating a separate incident of the theft of two vehicles in Newcastle West over the course of one night, between Thursday, October 29 and Friday, October 30.

Sergeant Michelle O’Halloran, Crime Prevention Officer in Henry Street Garda Station, confirmed that both cars were recovered:

“The incident happened at a residential property in Newcastle West. Entry to the house was gained through an unlocked front door, and the keys of two vehicles were taken from inside the property.

“The occupants discovered at approximately 5am on Friday morning that both vehicles were missing from their driveway.”

“Both vehicles were subsequently recovered later that day.”

“It is a timely reminder that we need to be security conscious, even when we are at home and particularly overnight,” Sergeant O’Halloran added.

“I would strongly encourage people to lock all external doors and windows. Keep vehicle keys away from doors, windows and letterboxes, and never leave them in an obvious or accessible location.

“Getting into the simple habit of checking that doors are locked before going to bed can prevent a great deal of distress and inconvenience.”
