RESIDENTS of a “forgotten” Limerick village have expressed their “disgust” over the “authorised” dumping of raw sewage into the River Funshion.

The small village of Kilbehenny located in one of the most South-Eastern parts of County Limerick on the Cork border has been dealing with the disposal of “raw sewage” into the River Funshion for decades.

Maurice Walse, a member of the Kilbehenny Sewerage Action Group (KSAG), said that the constant dumping of sewage is leaving the small village to decay and in months where the river is low “rats are entering the sewerage pipes along the river and into people’s homes”.

Kilbehenny village does not have a public sewage treatment plant or a modern sewerage network.

Houses in Kilbehenny are primarily served by treatment plants with the exclusion of the main street, where sewage is dumped into the local river.

“We haven't been able to develop our village over it. It's gone on too long and we need a solution.”

A public meeting will be held in Kilbehenny Hall onFriday night, April 28. Members of the public, Uisce Éireann and local authories have been invited.

A spokesperon for Uisce Éireann said: “As there is no public wastewater infrastructure in Kilbehenny village, Uisce Éireann currently has no remit in the area.

“Should Kilbehenny be included, or otherwise receive funding for the provision of infrastructure, Uisce Éireann will work with local authorities to identify and implement an appropriate solution.”
