September 27: When was the Treaty Stone sold off?

I GREATLY enjoyed Culture Night in the city on Friday and well done to all who put on events. I must single out the Hunt Museum for special mention – there was a wonderful buzz at the museum which attracted a big turnout and it was great to avail of the guided tour, as well as some of the other events put on for the enjoyment of visitors.

I also made my way down to City Hall where I was most impressed with the From Limerick with Love exhibition taking pride of place and brightening up the building no end! I was puzzled, though, by one of the pictures which seemed to show the Treaty Stone being auctioned, with a television camera in attendancce. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out what the story behind this was and none of my friends have any recollection of it. Perhaps you might let me know, Mr Editor!

ST JOSEPH STREET, LIMERICK CITY

The editor writes: the picture you refer to is a spoof auction which was filmed for the popular Tom and Paschal Christmas show, which ran for years. It will also feature in the upcoming book of photographs from the Leader archive, Limerick Through The Lens.
