Soc Dems to contest election in the South for the first time

THERE are two new candidates for Ireland South in the European election this week.
The Social Democrats are contesting the constituency for the first time in its short history, with Cork city-based solicitor Susan Doyle picked as their candidate.
And Mary Fitzgibbon, a nurse, midwife and lecturer, who lives in north Kerry is to enter the election as an Independent candidate.
Ms Doyle, who was selected following a convention by the Social Democrats said she is “extremely excited” to be representing the party in the European election.
“I have worked as a solicitor for more than a decade and opened my own legal practice in 2019, which focuses on housing, disability, immigration and discrimination.
"I have spent my career fighting for better services and resources for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. I love my work and would now like to bring my expertise to the European Parliament, where I will continue to fight every day to drive positive change at EU level,” she said.
Ms Doyle believes the EU can be “an incredible force for good”.
“Sadly, that potential is not being realised because we do not have enough strong social democratic voices at the decision-making table,” she added.
“If elected as an MEP, I will work tirelessly for the people of Ireland South; stand up to vested interests; defend the rights of vulnerable members of our community; and use every lever in my power to represent the interests of the people of Ireland South,” she pledged.
Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns, a Cork TD herself, said: “Susan’s legal expertise, and her deep understanding of the issues facing us in Ireland South, would make her a strong voice for our communities in Europe.”
Ms Fitzgibbon, meanwhile, is making a bid for Europe in order to “take back control” of Ireland.
“There are a myriad of important issues facing voters and my electoral focus is on sovereignty, immigration, neutrality, the family, agriculture and small business,” she explained.
Ms Fitzgibbon, who lives in Ballymacelligott, but was born in Tralee added: “The majority of our laws originate in Europe and EU law takes precedence over Irish law. The impact of this on our sovereignty, our independence and our ability to make decisions in the best interests of our country are compromised.
“For the sake of our country's children, our young people and future generations I am ready to serve you so that together we can take back control of our great nation, Ireland.”
The European Election takes place at the same time as the local and mayoral election on June 7 next.
