Students at Limerick school launch charity fundraiser following life-changing trip to Kolkata
STUDENTS at LAUREL Hill Coláiste in the city are fundraising for The Hope Foundation after a life changing trip to Kolkata in India.
The transition year students travelled to India in March to see first hand the projects being carried out by the charity.
Ahead of a bake sale which takes place this Tuesday, one of the students who attended - Rachel England - explained. “We all applied for the program in Spring of 2022. I just thought it was such an amazing opportunity and I had to do it. I think we were all really delighted when we found out that we were accepted into the programme and we spent about a year fundraising and then we travelled to Kolkata in March of 2023, and it was just the most incredible trip."
Seven students in total spent one week in the West Bengal state Capital witnessing what life is like for the locals who benefit from the work of The Hope Foundation.
“We visited all their projects that they have all over there and we visited the children and immersed ourselves into the culture. It was a huge experience that I don't think you get anywhere else. I learned a lot from it personally and I think as a group, even getting closer together because you're just seeing so much and you kind of need to connect with each other to understand it,” said Katie Dillon who is also in Transition Year.
The Hope Foundation supports families and children in India and creates programmes for schools with Saoirse Casey stating: “You can sponsor a child individually, which I know a few of the girls have already done. And we're trying to do it as a school now together. We're doing a bake sale”.
The Laurel Hill Coláiste FCJ bake sale takes place this Tuesday, May 2, at 11am with funds raised going to The Hope Foundation.
