University of Limerick researchers earn excellence award

A UNIVERSITY of Limerick research team have collected an award for developing a statistical model that guided government decisions during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (MACSI) research group, led by Professor James Gleeson, received the President’s Research Excellence and Impact Award for Outstanding Collaboration.
Their creation guided the majority of NPHET recommendations about restrictions, lockdowns, and the pace of easing restrictions during the pandemic and was directly used by the Chief Medical Officer when briefing Cabinet and the media.
Congratulating the team on their success, UL President Prof Kerstin Mey said: “Prof Gleeson and his team supported decision makers at the highest level of this country, and I am delighted that this valuable work is being recognised through this award”.
Accepting on behalf of the team, Prof Gleeson said: “It’s a privilege to work with such a talented group... and apply our skills to an issue of national importance”.
The MACSI were established in 2006, and have since developed an international reputation for modelling real world problems.
