Update issued on new rapid-build homes planned for Limerick estate

A NEW DEVELOPMENT of local authority homes is set to commence in the coming weeks, council has confirmed.
At this month's metropolitan district meeting, Fianna Fail councillor Catherine Slattery sought an update on the proposed development of 14 new homes in Carew Park on Limerick's southside.
The homes are designated as 'rapid-build', which means they will be built-off site and placed on a greenfield site in the city estate, in an area between De Vere Court and Rathbane Road.
Eight two-bed properties and six three-bed properties will be erected.
Clenn Construction, based in the nearby Galvone Industrial Estate, put together the units.
Delivered by housing charity Peter McVerry Trust, plans for the project were initially unveiled in 2021, with hopes of a completion date by that Christmas.
It's part of a wider scheme, which has also seen development on the northside, in Moyross.
The collapse of the previous contractor delayed the project, with the council shortly appointing a new builder to complete the scheme.
"It is expected that construction of these units by the Peter McVerry Trust will commence in the next few weeks," Sarah Newell, the housing officer stated in a written response.
Councillor Slattery, who asked the question of the local authority, has welcomed the news.
She said: "I think this development is badly needed. More developments like this should be introduced to vacant sites in the city. I'm delighted to hear work will begin in the coming weeks."
"It may only be a small development but it will revitalise the area. It will bring much needed housing to people, and I think it's a great incentive from Peter McVerry," added the City East member.
