GET READY for Pride 2023, as one Limerick college gets their multi colours out for the celebrations!
Mary Immaculate College (MIC) has unveiled a pair of rainbow pedestrian crossings in the wake of Limerick Pride week, from Monday July 3 to Sunday July 9.
As well as sporting their brightest rainbow road colours, the college took to flying an LGBTQIA+ flag at the main entrance on their city campus.
These two new additions are not the only rainbow crossings in the city however, as another two appeared in 2022: the first on Bridge St, Merchants Quay, while the second is located outside the Crescent shopping centre in Dooradoyle.
Saying on behalf of MIC that they are ‘delighted’ about Limerick’s latest rainbow additions, Director of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Interculturalism, Professor Lorraine McIlrath, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have two rainbow crossings at the front and the back entrances of MIC.
“We feel that they are so important here on campus, as our visual articulation to support diversity, inclusion and the LGBTQ+ community.”
Corroborating this, Dr Lauren McNamara spoke of the importance of having a ‘physical representation’ of inclusion, saying: “We are so happy that we have so many students and staff of different backgrounds and experiences, that we can bring them all together and enrich everybody's lives.”
Saying that he was “really, really proud as a gay man” to have these new rainbow crossings pop up, MIC staff member Dr Paul O’Brien said: “I really welcome the installation of these new crossings on campus.
The Pride Parade will take place in Limerick city on Saturday, July 8.
