Met Éireann's Irish weather forecast for the weekend has one big surprise in it...

The weekend's weather forecast is in and it promises that rare and wonderful "spring sunshine".

Friday: Mostly cloudy Friday morning with mist and fog patches, and patchy drizzle in the east and south. Showery rain will move into southern areas through the afternoon and spread northwards.

Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in light to moderate east to southeast breezes.

A band of showery rain will clear northwards Friday night, followed by drier and clearer weather.

Towards morning, another band of rain will begin to move up from the south. Relatively mild with lowest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees in moderate southeast wind.

Saturday: Breezy as a band of showery rain tracks northwards. Becoming drier with limited sunny spells following the rain. Mild for the time of year with highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees, in moderate to fresh east to southeast winds.

Saturday night: Becoming mostly dry overnight as any lingering rain clears northern coasts. Some clear spells developing, with lowest temperatures of 4 to 9 degrees in light to moderate northeasterly breezes.

Sunday: Dry across most areas with spells of spring sunshine and just light to moderate east to northeast winds. Highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees, warmest away from eastern counties.

Sunday night: Continuing mostly dry overnight with long clear spells developing in the east and south. Becoming cloudier elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees with light to moderate northerly winds.

Monday: A little cooler and breezier too but with generally dry with sunny spells and just isolated showers. Highest temperatures of 8 to 13 degrees in a rather brisk northeast wind - mildest across southern counties.

Tuesday: Continuing mostly dry with sunny spells. Possibly becoming cloudier later on with some light rain developing along northern coastal areas. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees in moderate to fresh northerly winds.

FURTHER OUTLOOK: Overall dry but cool by day and cold by night with a return to frost and icy conditions.
