On Sunday afternoon, Cashel King Cormacs signaled their intentions for the year ahead with a ruthless comprehensive victory over Sean Treacys in Annacarty in round two of this year’s Tipperary Co-Op West Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship.
Sean Treacys arrived into the game buoyed by their victory over Eire Og in round one seven days previous. However short a few regulars they never reached the heights of their round one victory and proved no match for a very determined and well-drilled Cashel King Cormacs side.
Ross Bonnar had the opening point after just ten seconds and Cashel who had a wind advantage ultimately never looked back. The 23rd-minute dismissal of Eoin Sheldon did not help Sean Treacy's case. Cashel hit 17 first-half points limiting Sean Treacys to just four points from play.
They would repeat the trick in the second half with a further 17 scores (2-15) with David McGrath raising both green flags. They were powerful and dominant in all lines of the field, linking up well and their first touch was of considerable note.
Their half-back line of James Cummins, Ronan Connolly, and Conor O’Dwyer were the launch pad for the supply to the full forward line while Eoghan Connolly was also dropping deep and his runs at the heart of the Sean Treacys defence coupled with those of the powerful Paddy Fahy had Sean Treacys at sixes and sevens.
All six forwards were on target with their full forward line contributing 2-9 between them. Devon Ryan was on target eleven times with seven from placed balls while wing forwards Cathal Quinn and Oisin O’Donoghue chipped in with six points between them.
They could have had a further two or three possible green flags but for Shane Stapleton between the Sean Treacys sticks such was their appetite for scores.
Devon Ryan and Ross Bonnar had Cashel three points to one up after seven minutes with Shane Fahy the Sean Treacys scorer. Cashel though continued to push on with Devon Ryan on target and Eoghan Connolly dropping deep and then powering forward.
Oisin O’Donoghue and Cathal Quinn added points and by the three-quarter mark, they led, 0-9 to 0-2. Michael Feehan cut the gap early in the second quarter however Cashel continued to be more clinical in terms of passing and movement.
Ger Browne opened his account and Cathal Quinn had a big influence on the proceedings. Sean Treacys were reduced to fourteen men seven minutes before the break when referee Seanie Peters showed a straight red card to Eoin Sheldon.
Patrick Dawson and Michael Feehan added points for Sean Treacys but with Ross Bonnar and Devon Ryan in fine form, Cashel would go in 0-17 to 0-6 ahead at the break. Shane Stapleton denied a goal for Cashel just before the break.
Sean Treacys moved Sean Ryan R into the forwards for the second half with Colm Kennedy going to defence but any slight hope of a comeback was dashed almost immediately on the resumption when Oisin O’Donoghue’s run saw him lay off possession to David McGrath who after having somewhat of a quiet first half however he turned back around his marker before shooting past Stapleton for the games first goal.
Ger Browne, McGrath, and Ross Bonnar add three points with Cashel having 1-3 on the board inside the first four minutes. Patrick Dawson who was the Sean Treacy's main scoring threat replied with a point however there was an air of inevitability about this game and that was further evident in the sixth minute when David McGrath hit his second goal.
McGrath started the run at goal and unselfishly passed to Ger Browne who saw his effort saved by Stapleton but McGrath was on hand to send the rebound to the net. Cashel held a 19-point advantage and the game played out to a comfortable conclusion as they outscored Sean Treacys 0-12 to 0-8 in the final twenty-four minutes.
Treacy’s were limited at times to placed balls however Colm Kennedy did have two long-range efforts. Cashel were constantly trying to add to their tally and Shane Stapleton pulled off some good saves including one from Oisin O’Donoghue who had been put through by Devon Ryan.
