Volunteers from several Carrick-on-Suir community groups and clubs rolled up their sleeves and carried out a clean-up of the River Suir and its banks in the town as part of the Clean Coasts Big Beach Weekend.
A large group from Carrick-on-Suir and District Lions Club and Carrick Paddlers Club for canoeists and kayakers along with Carrick Tidy Towns and Environment Group members took part in the rubbish collection on Saturday, September 21.
They were joined by members of the town’s Ukrainian community and residents from Shalom House at Ballynevin, Carrick.
Carrick Paddlers members went on the river in their boats and collected any rubbish they could find and retrieve.
Volunteers picked up a lot of large discarded objects from the river including a piano keyboard, scrap metal and traffic cones.
They were among 15 groups and close to 300 volunteers from county Tipperary who removed an estimated 1.7 tonnes of marine litter in litter collections for the Big Beach Clean weekend organised by Clean Coasts between September 20 and 22.
A record number of over 600 clean-up events were organised by volunteers throughout the country for the campaign. They removed over 95 tonnes of litter nationwide, making this Clean Coasts’ largest clean-up event yet.
Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club combined the clean-up event with some bulb and wildflower planting and weeding in the Bog Field area of Carrickbeg.
