On Thursday, May 25, the Ursuline said goodbye to the Leaving Cert Class of 2023. The whole school gathered in the Sr Ursula Memorial Hall for the final assembly of the year.

A number of students were awarded prizes. Ava Murphy, sixth-year, was the recipient of the Helen Larkin Fitzgerald Trophy.

This was in recognition of her courtesy, respectful demeanour, her positive contribution to School life and her ability to cope with the challenges she faced.

Ava was presented with her award by guest speaker and past pupil, Deirdre Adams.

The aim of the company is to empower poor women in India to become economically independent. She told the Leaving Certs to develop good habits and to try their best even at the things they feel they are not very competent in or don’t particularly like.

She wished them good luck and reminded them they all have talents and that God wants them to use their talents as best they can to make a positive impact on those around them.

Other awards included the Ursuline 250 Jubilee Trophy, which was presented to Sixth Year Aoife Lanigan for her positive attitude and friendliness towards everyone. Lorna Ryan, who made her Senior Camogie debut in February, was chosen as the Sports Student 2023.placeholder image

She made huge contributions to Athletics, Football and Camogie during her time in school and has showed total commitment to her clubs and county at all levels.

Patsy Norton, Chairperson of the School Council, presented a gift on behalf of the School Community to Ms Mary Purcell, Speech and Drama teacher, on the occasion of her retirement. Mary encouraged so many students to excel in their exams, and to engage in acting, dramatisation, oratory and recitation.

Her lovely presence will be sorely missed by everyone in UCT. May she enjoy a long, active and happy retirement.

The Dwan Salver was shared jointly by Patsy Norton, Sixth Year and Anna O’Brien, Fifth Year. Patsy received distinctions and gold medals in both her Senior Advanced Recital Piano and Senior Advanced Recital violin. Anna achieved a distinction in her Grade VIII violin.

Patsy was also presented with the Hyland Trophy, for Music Student of the Year by Ms Joan Butler.

The David Molony medal for Performance was given to Megan Boland for her commitment and success in Public Speaking. Megan was the National Winner of ARTiculation when she was in TY and has been selected for the Irish Linguistics Olympiad team, which will compete internationally this summer.

The Sr Ursula Memorial Medal was won by Junior Cycle student Kate Walsh for her original pencil sketch. She was presented with her prize by Ms Amy Delahunt.

Students who were recognised as highly commended for their original submissions for the Sr Claire Ursula Memorial Medal included Cáit Browne, Sarah Murphy, Genevieve Ní Bhreacáin, Tosca Berti, Delphine Coppeaux, Aoibhinn Kirwan, Mary Ryan, Aobh Quinn, Chloe Cahill and Bibi Russell.

Best of luck to all the Sixth Years in their exams over the coming weeks, and congratulations to all those who received prizes.

Thanks to the Class of 2023 for the wonderful contribution they have made to the school during their five or six years in the Ursuline.

The assembly finished with the premiere screening of the Ursuline Lip Dub 2023, which was shot on May 9 and featured nearly every student in the school.
