Councillor Declan Burgess has warmly welcomed this week’s news that the HSE remains fully committed to the 60-bed Community Nursing Unit in Cashel and the facility has its place on the HSE’s new Capital Plan.
In a statement, Cllr Burgess said: “Instead of political shows, I requested a meeting with the Minister for Older People, Mary Butler, to be proactive and discuss the future of St Patrick’s Hospital in Cashel. A number of reassurances and commitments were given, which is very welcomed.
“The HSE are currently assessing HSE-owned lands at Palmers Hill in Cashel. I am looking forward to this assessment being available and the Minister is going to keep me informed of the progress. It is hoped an update on this will be provided at the end of the month. I was quite clear that I don’t believe the Palmers Hill site is an appropriate or realistic option.
“However, I am happy that Minister Mary Butler and her team will look at the four acres behind the current 21-bed assessment unit in St Patrick’s Hospital.
"I believe this space should be further explored. This area on the campus must be assessed to see if it’s a viable option. It was a positive response that they will take this location into consideration, and I will continue to pursue this.
“I am thrilled that the St Patrick’s campus will reach its full potential and have an enhanced level of services to the public, such as the Children’s Disability services.
“The confirmation of funding for the 60-bed unit for Cashel is very much a positive piece of news.”
He added: “This project has secured a spot in the new Capital Plan that was announced at the end May 2023. The fact that finance is in place is a strong indicator that this new build will go ahead as planned.
"The staff of St Patrick’s are very committed to the hospital and their patients.
“Their future is in Cashel and I’m glad to report that the Government has made a firm commitment that their spot is in Cashel and not elsewhere.
“This was very important to me as I know there has been great fear of services being withdrawn and staff having to move.”
