Tipperary County Council has secured a €9,000 Built Heritage Investment Scheme grant for this project and is also investing €10,000 from its coffers

Tipperary County Council is commencing a project to repair and restore Carrick-on-Suir’s 18th century town clock, it was announced at Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s monthly meeting.

The Council has secured a €9,000 Built Heritage Investment Scheme grant for the conservation works and has supplemented this funding with an additional €10,000 from the Council’s own coffers.

District Administrator Marie Cox said the funding will be spent firstly on carrying out safety works on the town clock building at the West Gate to enable safe access to the clock tower and then repair and conservation work on the clock and its timber louvres.

The clock hasn’t worked for some time and its hands are stuck on the time 10.40.

The clock is privately owned and the Council has secured permission from its owner to carry out the repairs and renovations.

Ms Cox informed councillors she has issued a Section 12 notification to the National Monuments Service to notify the service of the planned repair and restoration works.

A bat survey will have to be carried out before works commence.

She explained that if the Council secures further funding for the project, repair and renovations will be carried out on the clock tower’s parapet masonry and lead work.

Carrick-on-Suir Cllr Kieran Bourke described the plans to renovate this piece of Carrick’s heritage as “wonderful” news.

“It’s a very iconic building and even though we (the Council) don’t own it, we are taking responsibility for it and doing something about it.”

Carrick-on-Suir Town Clock was erected in 1784 and is one of the town’s most well-known landmarks.

It is a recorded monument in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, classified as being of “regional importance and of special archaeological, architectural, historical and social interest”.
