Independent election candidate Jim Ryan has said he will be a strong voice for carers in Ireland if he is elected

Independent election candidate for North Tipperary, Jim Ryan, has highlighted issues family carers face in a recent video he posted to social media.

He states that there are over 500,000 carers in Ireland and says "they simply do not get the recognition they deserve."

Mr. Ryan says that carers save the government hundreds of millions of euro each year in looking after their loved ones at home and is highlighting the need for more supports for carers.

He says that carers get "a miserable 64 cents a day in carers allowance and in some cases are not even getting paid due to the scrooge like means testing system."

Jim Ryan has said that if elected in the next election that he wants to be a strong voice for the carers of Ireland.

He states he wants to see carers get paid €350 a week instead, if he was elected.

Mr. Ryan would also like to abolish the means testing system for carers allowance which current sitting Tipperary TD Michael Lowry has also called for.
