'Town centre is lagging behind and needs to be revitalised'

Clonmel’s Mayor has suggested that he, District Administrator Carol Creighton and District Manager Jonathan Cooney would engage with the owners of the former Dunnes Stores site in O’Connell Street to ascertain plans for the site.

The town centre building has been vacant for the past seven years since the store closed.

He said that the owners of the Ormonde Centre in Gladstone Street should also be approached, and he agreed with Cllr Pat English that they should also make enquiries about the former Heaton’s store in O’Connell Street.

He asked if there had been any engagement with Remcoll, the owners of Market Place, since planning permission for the units there was approved.

Cllr Siobhán Ambrose understood that Remcoll were about to go to tender to begin construction to provide office accommodation at Market Place.

Tipperary County Council recently granted planning permission for the first phase of the redevelopment of the pedestrianised area that will involve the conversion of a section of the shopping district into office accommodation.

Most of the shop units at Market Place have been closed for a number of years.

The first phase of development involves the re-development of the block of units at the rear of Fennessy’s Hotel as far as the location of the former Xtra-vision store.

Cllr Pat English said that the town centre is lagging behind and needed to be revitalised.
