Brú Ború

The late Dr Bryan McMahon of Listowel was known and revered nationally and internationally as an illustrious poet, author, playwright, balladmaker and creator of historic pageants.

His son, the late Garry McMahon, also composed some of the foremost traditional ballads now being sung at home and abroad. In his days with the Kerry football team, he entered the Guinness Book of Records for scoring the fastest goal in an All-Ireland Final.

As a tribute to Dr Bryan MacMahon and his son Garry, Brú Ború held a special commemorative event on the  April 25. It was open to the general public and it formed part of AISTEAR 2030, the Comhaltas Journey over the next seven years.

The MacMahon family have strong connections with Cashel as Dr Bryan MacMahon’s wife Kitty Ryan was a native of Cashel.

Dr Bryan MacMahon’s sons Owen and Bryan shared memories, songs and stories while that outstanding singer from Kerry Karen Trench gave an unique rendition of some of Dr Bryan MacMahon’s songs.

The MacMahon brothers kept the audience enthralled with what was described as one of the most memorable nights in Brí Ború which is nestled in the shadows of the ancient Rock of Cashel.

The general consensus of the historic MacMahon event was that this informative, invigorating and thoroughly enjoyable cultural kaleidoscope should be brought to a wider public.
