At a function in Tipperary County Council Offices, Leas Cathaoirleach of the  Tipperary/Cahir/Cashel MD, Cllr Anglim, presented awards to those who make a real contribution to the community in which they live.

A very well-deserved Cathaoirleach Recognition Award went to Burncourt’s very own Maureen Creed. Maureen’s Shop is known far and wide by toddlers to the elderly.

For the local school children, it is there go to place for a treat, a place where your newspaper of choice is collected early each morning to ensure your daily reading.

It is the drop off point for a letter, parcel or message you might like delivered to the other end of the village. Maureen’s shop is the local Ticketmaster, where tickets for all local events are sold and kept for collection.

But Maureen’s is much more than a shop.

It is a focal point in the local community, where community notices are posted, Santa’s couriers leave the surprises and more importantly it is the emergency pointer if a regular shopper fails to appear, ensuring a check in to see if the person is well.

This concern for the welfare of others is Maureen’s outstanding characteristic. Her willingness to throw in her contribution and play her part in many aspects of village life is her abiding attribute.

Maureen has given a lifetime of commitment to ensuring the survival of the family business.

And yes, her shop is a  business but really it is much more than that in the village of Burncourt, a resource which has disappeared in so many rural communities.

Her dedication to the Community Hall is exemplary and her loyalty and attentiveness to the local church is phenomenal.

The preparation of the altar, her knowledge of ceremonies taking place ensures that all church celebrations run smoothly.

Maureen is a much-loved member of Burncourt Drama Group and of  the community of Burncourt.
