A new Community Policing Unit that will cover areas of North Tipperary has been welcomed by Deputy Michael Lowry.

"This new unit comprises seven Gardaí" he says, "who will be stationed in Newport, Roscrea, Nenagh and Killaloe Garda Stations.

"Their role will be the provision of a reliable and consistent Garda presence in these areas and their function will be tackling crime and anti-social behaviour in these towns. In doing so, the aim is to provide increased Garda visibility on the streets, which in turn will act as a deterrent to unlawful behaviour. Members of the unit will work on a structured roster to maximize their presence and interaction with the public. They will attend community meetings, maintain a proactive presence in local schools, and collaborate with local communities and agencies to develop problem-solving initiatives. They will also provide advice and support to both young and old in the community, aiming to build positive relationships and reduce fear of crime.

"Ultimately, the aim is to build positive relationships and nurture proactive community initiatives," says Deputy Lowry.
